 When a gyroscope is set in motion unless a another force is applied it will continue to point in that direction. If a gyroscope is put in gimbals (framework with bearings) the out of the framework can be move and the gyroscope still points in the same direction. This is a very accurate replcement of a compass. Hence the are used in ships, aircraft missiles etc. See the uses page on this website for a longer list of uses
