Question

Asked by: Jesse Rocco
Subject: World War II German Torpedo Gyroscope ?
Question: I have a Gyroscope in a wooden box with German writing on it. I believe the Gyro was for a training school in th DDR. I think that the Gyro itself is from a G7 torpedo but am unsure. The box is post war I think.

Does anyone have any information or souces on the Gyro's the Germans used during World War II ? (I would like to show some photos if possible).

Thanks Much - Jesse

 Hi Jesse

I have one that may be similar to yours. It looks very similar to the one shown at
http://www.gyroscopes.org/gallery.asp?page=3 which I saw for the first time today.

I'd never realised that it was (probably?) a German torpedo gyroscope. A note in the box from the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry dated 1986 suggests that the gyroscope is Victorian. I haven't checked for German writing, but the gyroscope has the mark "W&Co" and the number "871".

Get in touch and we can compare photographs.
