Question

Asked by: Robert F. Bevilacqua
Subject: MK 12 mod 1 GYRO Gear # 21210
Question: HI,

I am interested in some information regarding the history, age, use of and possible value of what I believe is a Gyroscope or part of one which I just acquired. I'm more interested in how it works and what it was used for than anything else. The gyroscope is about 4 inches housed in a chrome case with a brass base. All I see on the inside is a gear which can be spun. For storage, the mechanism sits in a bakelite holder which then sits in a round metal canister with a lid. This canister then sits inside another metal canister with a handle.

Markings on the gyroscope are 78304 - A1 - 1 MK XII - 1 GYRO 21210

Markings on the outside canister are GYRO Gear # 21210 Mark 12 Mod. 1 INT. HARN? Co.
U.S. 1913 U.S. P.I.G. Weight ? LBS
GROSS 10.9 NI?i 4.4
The two canisters are tarnished so it is difficult to identify or verify everything written on it.

The device is in very good shape, clean and the gear spins very smoothly. To me it doesn't appear to be a gyroscope but more a gear inside a metal housing but I am not knowledgeable on gyroscopes.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide in terms of what it is, its history and use.

Regards,
