Many years ago in physics class we made a very simple gyroscope like device.
It was made of 2 sticks forming a cross, they were connected together by a ball of Plasticine at their meeting point, and the arms of the stick had weights at their tips (don't remember what they were made of).
When you made it stand on something (like the tip of a pencil) the device would tilt but not fall.
I would like to recreate this thing, but I have many questions..
First off, it didn't have any spinning wheels, so how come it still worked?
Also I'm having a hard time with the measurments.. How far should I put the "arms" of the cross from the center? How heavy the weights should be?
Does the Plasticine at the center plays an important role in it or is it just to keep the structure together? |
