 Well in the beginning there were not many alternatives. Probably start navigation. So precision was the many advantage, the disadvantage was cost.

Radio triangulation is useful as it gives exact position quickly and probably more cheaply.

Of course GPS is now very usefull. However there are circumstances when you can't get a GPS signal. In which case gyroscopic navigational instruments are used.
