Question

Asked by: Victor Geere
Subject: What will happen if ...
Question: In prototype 6 that Glen built (four gyroscopes on a plate), the gyroscopes will tend to bend the structure upwards if it is turned through 90 horizontal degrees.

My guess is the horizontal circular force will tend to send the gyroscopes to the center of the structure at a point above the structure at a height equal to the radius of the structure. Effectively, the 90 degree horizontal turn (pie slice), turned on it's side now pointing upwards and inwards toward the center of the structure. Imagine the result looking like a closed upside down umbrella.

Instead of just turning the device through 90 degrees, if it is spun really hard, so that the centrifugal force forces the umbrella open again. The outer perimiter of the structure will still be forced upwards and inwards by the gyroscopes, while the centrifugal force of the structure will force the centre of the umbrella upwards relative to the outer perimiter of the umbrella (as it forces the umbrella open).

If it spins fast enough it will probably turn most structures to grafitti on the shed wall, but before that, will the total structure be forced upwards? (Fly???)
