A fibreoptic has laser light inserted at the end. The fibre optic can be circular or straight, the beam will have a phase relationship with the end of the cable i.e. the wave peak to end of cable can be measured. If the cable moves the light inside will not because it isn't effected by movement being a wave.

This movement changes the relationship of the end of the cable and the ligt wave. Although called a gyro it isnt it is a very accurate way to measue small movements.

If the path is a circle then the results of two at rigt angles to each other can be used in the same way as a rate gyro with no moving parts.
