Question

Asked by: Bill Pratt
Subject: Automatic Pilots
Question: You show the autopilot as being invented by Elmer Sperry in 1909. Can you direct me to the reference source for that information?. The first recorded flight using a gyro stabiliser was in 1912 at Hammondsport USA flown in a USN Curtiss C-2 aircraft. My understanding is/was that Lawrence Sperry , son of Elmer, was the developer. If Elmer Sperry has developed an autoplitot:gyrostabiliser in 1909 I imagine he would have tested it sooner than 1912 - hence my question. Much enjoyed your website, very informative. Thanks and regards. Bill Pratt
