 Where the gyroscope has two gimbals (two rings connected by bearings). Each set of gimbals allows the gyroscope to rotate freely on another axis. Normally no more than 2 gimbals are used, because the third gimbal would be on the axis spin axis, and hence quite pointless. A number of Victorian gyroscopes were produced with 3 gimbals for scientific experiments and demonstrations.
