Question

Asked by: eric luppold
Subject: Two Gimbal Control Moment Gyro
Question: Is one of the benefits of adding a second gimbal to a control moment gyro that is can prevent rotation of a spacecraft about the gyro's spin axis? Also, does it allow the gyro to avoid having to spin at a constant rate? And my final question is, does having a second gimbal keep frictional forces from overwhelming the gyro precession? Thank you.

I doubt it prevents or causes frictional forces overwhelming the gyro.

With regard to a second gimbal preventing rotation of spacecraft on the spin axis. Hmm no I don't think so. Torque will always be applied from the friction on the bearings to the gimbals, even if just small amounts. An extra set of gimbals if correctly aligned could reduce this but not stop it.
