Question

Asked by: Ian Walsh
Subject: Er.. Gyroscope
Question: Hi....Ok

As I understand it a spinning gyroscope always point the same direction.

does that mean that the gyroscope (if set) would point north acting as a compass ............Or does it point to a 'direction' in space......if so, as the Earth is rotating would the gyroscope turn once a day ( the Earth turning under it) .....

does the Earths orbit around the sun affect this...for that matter the solar system is in orbit around the Galaxy.....what frame of reference does a gyroscope use........

Would a Gyroscope still work if the whole universe somehow disappeared what 'reference' would it have then
