Question

Asked by: Luis Gonzalez
Subject: Why is Torque measured in lb-ft and not in lb-ft-ft/sec-sec?
Question: If Torque = F x R
& F = M x A
& A = Acceleration is measured in ft / sec-sec
So F = Force is measured in lb-ft / sec-sec
Therefore Torque should be measured in lb-ft-ft / sec-sec
However Torques is always presenter as lb-ft (it does not even show the time factor), why?

Thank you, Luis

You will probably find the above link useful. In addition, I think you will find that most physics now uses SI units.

Torque = N m
N = Newton which is measures as kg m/s2
Therefore Torque = Kg m2/s2

Why bog yourself down in the mathematics?

Who presents it as lb-ft and do you care if you know better? Just more proof that you should not believe everything you read, especially from armchair professors.

 Dave,
Thanks for the link. It has a lot of well organized, good content.

It’s easy to switch units of measure (whatever is easier for the venue).

Mathematics appears as a bog down on the surface, but it’s a great way to pre-test theories before sinking serious time and money into physical models (and it can be fun). It’s a mater of perspective, preference, and disposition.

Asking questions can clarify misunderstood concepts at the core of worthwhile efforts. Clarity is important to achieve a goal (though some people get there by accident).

When you believe, you stop asking questions. It’s good to know who to ask questions from, and it’s wise to know what to believe.
Armchair athletes are a joke. How about armchair thinkers, professors, etc?
Thank you, Luis
