Subject: clockwise?
Question: Does the gyroscope have to spin in a clockwise direction for it to maintain stability?

 The answer is no. You can cause a gyro to precess in either direction, clockwise or counter clockwise. If you have a toy gyro set it on a pedestal and watch. Then pick it up and sat the opposite side of the axel on the pedestal and watch.
