A ring laser gyroscope has no moving parts. Instead an optical fibre cable is wrapped round and round in a circle. A laser is then projected down the optical fibre. The 'beam'
bounces from side to side 'in' the optical fibre cable until it comes out the other end and
then readings are taken from a sensor. If the cable is tilted at an angle small changes in the readings can be observed. This can then be used to calculate the changes in degrees.
