Question

Asked by: Steppegold
Subject: Gyroscopes and Gold Pan?
Question: On the Alaska Gold Forum we are puzzling over a Brazilian patent for a mechanical gold pan:
http://v3.espacenet.com/results?sf=n&DB=EPODOC&PGS=10&CY=ep&NUM=WO8606005&LG=en&ST=number
The pan is tilted and attached from below to a metal rod driven by an eccentric motor. The pan undergoes a "counter-rotation... ....with the same turning speed of the shaft, which maintains it stationary while it gravitates and oscillates about the fulcrum".

I'd be grateful for any ideas about whether there is a gyroscopic component to its motion, and whether the sand in the pan is subjected to any significant Coriolus effect

thankyou
