Question

Asked by: Harshant Singh
Subject: Alignment of spin axis
Question: Hi folks
I am a student of physics, and read somewhere that gyroscopes have the tendency to align their spin axes with the axis of rotation of the system. Is this true and if it is what is the mechanism behind it?

yep, its true. Its called gimbal lock. Its actually a limitation of the gimbals. Basically all the joints/axis line up. Then they all start moving together. Can cause problems if the gyro is being used as a sensor.
