I recall Laithwaite asking a young kid to lift a 60-pound spinning gyroscope, which the kid appeared to do effortlessly. Hmmm.

Ian

 Dear Ian,
There will be no change of weight on the scale, but what is happening is that the gyroscope transfers all of its weight to act downwards through the centre of its fulcrum, or in the demonstration you saw, downwards though the young lad’s legs.

"I recall Laithwaite asking a young kid to lift a 60-pound spinning gyroscope, which the kid appeared to do effortlessly. Hmmm."

It's because as Sandy said it transfers it's weight to the fulcrum. When you normally lift a large heavy object (like a sack of potatoes) it takes more effort because you have to use a lot of muscles to control the balance of the object. Small heavy objects are easier to lift because you don’t have this problem. Lifting a spinning gyroscope is like holding a small heavy object because it takes care of the balance problem for you as long as you let it precess and turn with the object as in Laithwaite’s demonstration.
