Question

Asked by: Sh. Yazdani
Subject: precession torque in gyro
Question: Hi,
It is very important for me to know if we apply a tilting torque to a gyroscope (for example 5 NM), how much is its precession torque (reaction of gyro)? Is it the same 5NM or another value? How much is it?

You should give the answer by your own if you think a little bit:

To stop precession you have to apply a counter force against precession direction with the same value as the tilting force. Therefore tilting torque and precession torque must have the same value as well.
However, as soon as a counter torque is applied agains precession movement, the gyro in precession is out of balance and hence the gyro will move in tilting direction. That's the reason why a gyro drops over the time in tilting direction because of a counter torque caused by friction in the bearings.
