Question

Asked by: Chris Turner
Subject: Vertical lift weighing board uses wrong principle
Question: Geoff Russell's vertical lift weighing board does not measure lift or weight.
Any pivoted board is measuring torque balance about the pivot point. It is not measuring weight, mass, gravity or
lift!. The apparatus being measured (containing gyroscopes) can generate torque and this is confused for weight.
Weighing scales can only work if the items being weighed are connected to beam via means that cannot transmit any non vertical force. This cannot be easily acheived with dynamic apparatus.
Preferably dont use beam or counterweight at all but instead suspend apparatus from a spring balance on a very long rope.
The simple mistake has mislead many, perhaps deliberately.
