Apart from the obvious bicycle connection (the wheels keep you upright)the gyrocompass is a fairly standard item which consists of two flywheels at right angles. The axes are held still ("caged") whilst the aircraft is still and the flywheels are spun up. The gyro is then "uncaged" and it stays in its orientation w.r.t the Earth's gravity(??) irrespective of the aircraft's orientation. Variations on this theme provide the physical instruments like bank indicator and artificial horizon and that ball- shaped thing. Physical gyros are now being replaced by electronic gyroscopes which exploit the same effect but with spinning electrons

Hope this helps
