I don't have a powerball but I can tell you roughly how it works. It consists of a small gyroscope mounted on a very small diameter shaft. The ends of a shaft sit in circular grove around the inside of a ball that encloses it. This grove lets the gyroscope precess freely when an appropriate force is applied. Since there is some friction between the shaft and the grove, this induced precession can actually increase the rotation speed of the gyroscope. I have heard that someone who is good at it can start the gyro with a flick of their finger and then bring it all way up to 12000 rpm by rotating it with their wrist.
